GENERAL FISHING TIPS

  • If you are planning on fishing the next day, try finding a place where you can dig worms up. The night before, pour some water water over the place you want to dig. In the morning dig up some worms. When you’re fishing, use a very small hook, small piece of a worm, and a small bobber. The bobber should be set that the hook is floating about 1 foot over the floor.
  • When you’re fishing in ponds and canals and small rivers for bass, then you only need to carry on rod and a few lures. I like to carry my Ugly Stik, and use a fanny packet/tackle-box. You only need 5 different lures with you: 1) Beetle Spins (from Wal-Mart), 2) Booyah! Spinnerbaits (for Big bass & jack-pickerel), 3) Jitterbugs (ask someone to help you find them at Wal-Mart), and 4-inch ZOOM worms (also get some 2/0 worm hooks and ¼ ounce weights. Use Beetle Spins all day for bream and bass, use Booyah! spinnerbaits for bass early and late and at night. Use Jitterbugs at night, and worms all day long and when bass are on the bed. Good Luck!
  • I’ve caught catfish, crappie and perch on gummy bears. If you let them go stale, that’s even better since they get stiff, and stay on the hook better. The best part of all, is that gummy bears is one of a very few variety of baits that is good to snack on while you’re fishing.
  • I have learned that when using a rigged rubber worm you should cast it out along the shoreline and real very slowly. If you get a bite and you do not get it you should real a little bit faster than you were before because it makes the fish think that the worm is really alive. If you are lucky the fish will go at it again and you have your second chance to real in the big one. Hope the tips help ya big time. Fishier Tyler

  • This is a tip I would like to share. When fishing with jigs and your tired of jigging the lure off the bottom then take a paddle tail or a charteuse tube jig and cast and reel medium speed. you will probably catch any surface fish. tight lines.
  • I noticed if you use glittery and different colored powerbait you get a lot of nibbles
  • Seeing Red - To increase strikes, try painting the treble hooks red on your topwater, crank and suspending lures. Why? Red is the color of blood. I noticed that I get more strikes if my hooks are painted red.Go ahead ! Try it! Tight lines. Wayne Jb
  • For most trout at small lakes if its windy go to the side the wind is blowing( unless it’s a strong wind) and use worms on a drop shot rig, and flout the worm about 5 feet above the bottom. IT WILL WORK!!!
  • If you are going crabing, if you catch a crab you should all ways grab it on the back legs so it doesn't bite you with its front claws
  • The best way to catch bluegill is on a cane pole with about 6 feet of 8 pound test on it, use a tiny hook with a small breadball. I have caught over 20 fish in 15 minutes with this method. For carp use bread floating at the surface or corn. Soft-shell turtles like marshmallows and they FIGHT! Bass on the bed like a live lizard hooked through the lips. If you Have any tips or questions e-mail me at NRC365@comcast.net
  • When fishing on warm summer nights take some flourescent glow - in - the dark paint and apply to the bottom of a jitterbug and charge it with a powerful flashlight, cast it out there and chug it in at variant speeds but keep it slow good luck fishermen. R.D. Burns 13
  • My tip is to be creative with the lures and never count live bait out. When you throw the same thing out over and over and dont get a nibble its like them saying "I dont want that" try different tecniques and lures and dont leave the spot just because you havent caught anything, their might be a monster their. Trevor Caughman
  • I have a tip that I would like to pass along to other fellow bassers. During the summer months I fish a lot of weekly tournaments. When I was young I had a hard time keeping fish alive. I started adding ice to my livewells like a lot of other tournament fisherman do.  I had a lot of success with this tactic. As we all know that most ice, even block is heavily chlorinated. So, at the end of a day of fishing I started collecting fresh lake water in an empty water bottle.  I take it home and put it in empty margarine containers and freeze it.  The margarine containers make it easy to pop the ice out and in to the livewell at the start of the tournament day. Nice free unchlorinated ice. Needless to say, I don't have a problem with fish dying in my livewells. Also, keep your margarine containers in the cooler until you need them. God Bless, Jamie Jones, Benton, AR
  • When fishing a hollow flipping tube. Stuff a cotton ball in the hollow end, Then saturate it with your favorite fish attractent,As you fish, the fish formula will wick out for a very long time. James Marshall, Hot springs village, AR
  • A great fishing spinnerbait for the younger ones would be a 1/4 ounce single blade, firetiger spinnerbait for the kids to have experience on the waters.
  • One of the things you don't want to do is rip the hook out of the fishes cheek. What I use is bread, obute 3,4 worms,2 minnows. And fishermen if I could tell you what that would catch any thing except for who ever your with. Nathan age 9
  • Here's my fishing tip of my life so far i have found out that most fisherman are always stressed just have fun when you go out and catch some really nice ones ok just have as much fun as you can and if you dont get any then try tomorrow ok bye dave(Turtle)
  • Try casting a black 4" plastic worm up into the shallows without the use of a weight. Just twitch it along the top of the water with a # 1 brass hook. I would advise using line of no more than 8 lb test. Watch the worm as much as you can because a lot of the strikes will come as soon as the lure hits the water. When I fish a 4" worm I generally choose a black color. Watch your line when it pulls tight set the hook. Catch a Bigg'n
  • When I go fishing i put a leech at the end of the hook with a bober about 4 feet up. After a second or 2 set the hook and you will have a fish on. This strategy works good for panfish, walleye, bass, pike, gobys(what you dont want kill em if you catch one in michigan), trout, catfish, dogfish(bowfin).
  • When fishing in a large lake there are usally large fish.So you should set your line tension pretty high. If you're fishing for bass use salmon eggs, night crawlers,or minnows.
  • If you want to catch a big fish use dogfood with a bobber. Wait for 5 seconds when the fish tugs.  It's good for catfish, bluegill or bass
  • To catch big fish. Catch a minnow with bread  if you wanna waste your worm then catch a minnow with a worm. I would do this in a man made lake, they have tons of minnows. After you catch like 5-10 minnows go to a more bigger lake with basses or muskies. You can chop the minnows or leave them like that (I catch more chopped) Then you're ready to get those Muskies.
  • When its cloudy fish are at the top of the water so use topwater baits. When its sunny most fish are light sensitive so their at the bottom of the water i use zoom lizards (bass) with 2-3 sinkers. Ryan/Borger, Texas
  • Use a small eagle claw hook with a zoom green lizard I caught a 15" fish and 17" fish.
  • When using a jitterbug use veryyyyyyy slow retreive
When using chugbug or popper do a pattern of reeling and twitching.
Here is a funny little trick. If there are logs where you are fishing logs, stumps, etc. Throw your bait out or if your close up just drop your bait or lure by it let it set there (it worked for me)A fish might try and take it.If it doesen`t work that`s why it`s called fishing not catching.
  • If you use a worm, it might be best to put a sinker on, and if you use a cricket, you might find a bit of luck with a bobber, and with a crank bait, all you need to do is put 'er on and let 'er rip!!!!!
  • When fishing for Muskellunge, I usually use a zara spook top water stickbait.  Over the first two feet of line from the lure, put candle wax on it, just rub it on.  This gives it more action.
  • When Fishing A Rattletrap use fast retrieve
When using ZOOM Lizards twitch 1-4 times by twitching up.It hasn`t worked really any for me but it has for my dad. From Jon S. Big time bass fisher
  • Throw more shallow crank baits to get more bites. shallows are versitile baits you can reel them slow for top water action or reel them a little faster fo deeper action. good luck
  • In 2 to 3 ft of water use a 3'' shiny top water minnow style lure cast ,move it a little let it set 4 about 7 seconds move it about 2'' then repeat that about 5 times.if you don't catch any thing repeat it again. Tip from Timmy - Mineral, VA
  • A helpful tip on using live bait is hooking them through the bottom lip so they can move easier like a regular fish swiming
  • When you throw your bait in you wait eight seconds and then start to real it slowly. If you can feel that the fish is trying to get your bait then stop for a minute.
  • If you want better rod acton or longer casting I would suggest getting a rod with more guides.
  • If you go bottom fishing you might want to use 30 pound test line.
  • When fishing for largemouth bass use a pure black artificial worm with a pink tail
  • Fish Bite best when Dogwoods and Redwoods are in bloom.
  • Just use a jointed rapala. Pick size by how big the fish get in the lake or river. And the rainbow trout color it works for almost anything. all kinds of bass, pickeral, perch, trout, sunfish.
  • If you want to have a little more fun when ice fishing.  Cover the hole up with a coat or something so it is dark and look down the hole.  You can see the fish swim by and it helps the time pass on a slow day. It is really fun and it helps you understand about the fish and its behavior I think.  You can also see them bite it which adds some exitment. ENJOY THE ICE FISHING KIDS
  • When fishing with minnows, take an empty, clear, water bottle and punch holes in it with a phillips head screwdriver. then put about a dozen live minnows in it. Next, tie it to your boat or dock about 3 feet down and use a live minnow lure about 2 feet away from the bottle. this will catch em every time. works best in the spring.
  • When fishing in saltwater and you have a dead shrimp, let the line out a little and reel it in and then wiggle it some. I guarentee you'll catch something."Thats's what  I did and I caught a 3 1/2 ft Bonet Head Shark.
    From Karl
  • Take a suet feeder and stuff bread and cheese in it and put it next to the bobber. It will atract more fish
  • When you are Trolling with a umbrella rig in salt water in the ocean you can catch alot of bluefish and striped bass. The best tip is to keep your thumb on the line if you don't the line will get tangled when letting line out. I tried this my self and cought over 30 bluefish! If you don't have a boat you can cast off the beach. I garetee some fish for dinner. But of corse you will need to know the tide, when, where, and how to do it.            GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!
  • Baits to use that are the best
  • Striped bass - clams, crabs, bunker, or Herring, bloodworms, sandworms. Bluefish- squid strips, little minnows, bunker, or herring

    Bullheads (baby catfish)- anything.
    Sunnys - anything.
    Snappers- minnows or bait fish
Flounder / Fluke - bloodworms, sandworms, clams, squid strips.
  • I like to use rubber worms alot and one of the things i like to do is cast it over a stump hanging over the water so when you jig it it goes up and down and stays in one spot so when you want to fish the same spot for a while you don't have to keep on casting.
  • If you keep your line tight and always set the hook with a shiner you'll always get'em.
  • Two years ago I ended using a bobber with a grasshopper. I don't use a bobber any more but I caught a LOT of fish with a bobber. For beginers use a bobber and a grasshopper will catch you a lot of fish.
  • It is a good idea to fish in the morning or at night because it is nice and cool and the fish bite more when it is cooler
  • When your just learning to cast and can't quite hit your target try taking a large step forward. If you are right handed step with your left foot and if your left handed step with your right foot
  • When using a Rat L Trap move the lure in a z motion then it will look more like a real minnow
  • My tip is when you are using a black and white worm .Put the hook in between both colors.
  • Coat all your artificial lures and even some live ones with bacon grease even use a piece of bacon fat as bait, fish love the grease.
  • Some fish like...catfish+carp-love bread
                               perch+sunfish-like stinky cheese
                               chub+catfish-love hot dogs
                               largemouth bass-like minnows+night crawlers
